Teaching Philosophy

Students all have different ways of learning. Whether it is visual, audio, or hands on. It should be explained to students why what they are learning is important. One big issue facing students today is the fact that they believe most of what they are learning doesn’t matter, and it is our job as educators to explain to them why it is important for them to learn what we are teaching them. As an English major, I think that teaching (English) should be helping students connect materials to the world and themselves. I believe in using reading materials as a vehicle for students to learn about themselves, society, and previous ways of society. Also, writing should be a means of reflection on how students understand material, what they learned about the world, and how they can connect. I think always bringing that connection back is important in order for students to understand how literature affects them.

Teachers need to have a sense of humor, compassion, and dedication. A sense of humor is important to cope with any mistakes or mishaps that come up. It is important for teachers to make connections with students as a role model or mentor. Although it could be considered “extra work” or extra pressure on a teacher, I think the most rewarding part of teaching is making meaningful connections with students and being there to help. I want to teach because of a passion for the subject, I want to help students understand why learning is important (life-long learners), and I want to make students want to come to school. As well as be there as a mentor for any students willing to open up.

School doesn’t have to be a dreaded place. I will teach for acceptance and tolerance in regard to bullying, homosexuality, minorities, disabilities, etc. I want to be someone students can come to for advice or guidance. I will teach for students needs, not just out of the textbook. I strive to try a variety of approaches to see which students respond to best; every single class is different. The most important thing for learning is to have a comfortable and safe environment in a classroom. No one should be afraid to ask questions. There is always room for healthy controversial conversations; all sides should be spoken for with no judgment passed.

As a Physical Education minor, the same ideals should be applied in the gymnasium. Many students are self-conscious and I think it is our job as educators to create an environment where students feel comfortable and safe enough to fully participate in physical activity. I also believe in making room for student-to-student mentoring when students are at a high enough level of social and personal responsibility.
